Herpes Simplex 2 or Genital herpes is a very common sexually transmitted inflection among sexually active age group specially 20- 49. This can be transmitted into inflected person to another by having sex, or even close contact. Therefore the HSV - 2 is very important disease and should be prevented well.

What is Genital Herpes (HSV-2) ?

Genital herpes is a DNA virus commonly associated with the genital regions of the human. It may be vagina, penis, rectum. Although it is commonly on the genital region, it may also found in the lips, mouth and other areas of the body.



Symptoms and signs of herpes

The symptoms of the condition is not common. Most of the people remains asymptomatic for a longer duration. They may show symptoms specially they get affected with another disease. Specially female may not show the symptoms.

However if you get herpes, you will see a painful one or two blisters on your genitalia they are very painful and initially do not discharging. After that they rupture and cause ulcers all over the genital area.
Except the genital ulcers there are some flu like symptoms like fever malaise etc.
Other very important part of herpes is its relapsing nature. It will be reappearing even after treatments. Although they do not cause severe symptoms like first time they will appear time to time.

What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV- 2 ?

Herpes simplex 1 and the herpes simplex 2 are two different viruses though they are in a same family. The HSV1 is mostly associated with the mouth, eyes, hands and the skin where as the HSV 2 is commonly associated with the genitalia, rectum, and perineum. However according to the change in the sexual patterns in modern world, the distribution of the HSV-1 and 2 have changed. Therefore we can found the both diseases in the both ares of the body.

How the herpes virus transmitted person to person?

Genital herpes virus is a sexually transmitted disease as we mentioned earlier. Therefore it can be transmitted from one person to other by having sex with the inflected person. However, the genital secretions also contain the virus, therefore after the contact with the genital area persons hands also can distribute the virus on others.Other important thing is that having anal sex and oral sex can transmits the disease to those areas too.  However having sex with a condom may prevent, your getting of the inflection. Also if you wash your hands after the contact with genital organs it also can prevent the disease.

How are at risk of getting Herpes virus ?

The most susceptible group of people for this disease is the persons with multi-sexual contacts, sexual workers, women with husbands having other contact and the babies who born to the mothers having herpes virus.
According to the details in US it is found in 1 in 5 women in sexually active age group.

 Management and treatment options for genital herpes

The most important thing here is the painful ulcers we have to use NSAIDs to prevent the pain. After that wound cleaning is necessary with normal saline. If they are inflected we have to use antibiotics. Also the anti- viral drugs like Acyclovir may necessary on the treatment of condition.

How to prevent the transmission of the herpes ?

1. Keep contact with only one sexual partner.

2. Use condoms when you are in unprotected sexual activity.

3. Always treat the disease if you get it.

4. Inform the partner and treat them too.

5. Use protective measures in the relapses

6. In pregnancy, take advice from your health care provider to protect your child getting the condition.
